  • Non US/Canadian citizen crossing the border by land! Help!

Hi, I'm a non-US/Canadian citizen. I'm currently in Canada on a work permit but I'm not working.

Have you resigned from your job in canada? Or are you still on their roll and you just left ( since when?)
    This is important .

i'm also so worried that the border officer won't grant me an I94 that last long enough for me to at least renew my Canadian visa. Is it true that the duration of I94 is based on how you answer the officer's questions?

See, they will ask you the purpose , duration and what you will do after the visit.

You have to say you are visiting a friend( do not say boyfriend)
for 2 weeks before leaving for India as you are done in canada.
Also, do not say anything about finding work in the US and H1b.

You cannot say you will return to canada after the visit as you do not have a re-entry visa
and you do not have any ties ( student or work) to canada any more.
They have to be assured that you will leave US after the visit so the only way is to tell them you are leaving for India.
Get a one way return ticket from US to India to show to them.

It is true that the stay granted to you will depend on the whim of the officer and what you say to him.
Some officers are lenient , they grant you 6 mo nths even if you tell them you are here for only 2 weeks
( this happened with me). Some may just give you less.
You should not ask for more than 2 weeks in your situation.
If you say more, they may suspect you won't be going back.
Just have enough money to show to them for a few weeks if they ask.
