  • when should I file i-539 to change visa status from L1 to B2?

I came to US with L1-B work visa ( i-94 expires in year 2015), but now get tired of job and want to quit and do sight-seeing in US. So I need to file i-539 to change the status to B2 visa, I know the approval process usually takes 2 months, I don't want to risk being rejected , so I can't put resignation paper before being notified that it is approved. but once I get notified it is approved, will the status change take effect immediately? you know, the company usually requests 2 weeks notice period for resignation, I can't leave the company in 2 weeks after putting resignation paper. how do I solve this problem?

Do you eventually want to leave for home after you are done sightseeing on B2?

If you are thinking of switching jobs after a 2 month or so vacation, I think you should adopt a different strategy than changing to B2.
YOu will have to change status again from B2 to some work status, when you find a new job. And there is never a guarantee
if L1 to B2 and back to L1/H1 will be approved.

Also, can't you just take an unpaid 2 month vacation while you are on L1 and then resign later.

Thanks for the suggestion, Although I haven't tried, I don't think company will approve things like '2 months vacation ' or 5 months vocation that I am looking for. I actually want to learn some things in US in my own way instead of going to school. after that I will probably go back home to start my own business/career or extend b2 visa if the status change is approved.
