Strategy for Booking Tickets

My parents got their visa last week. Now they are planning to visit US. I understand that booking return tickets is economical. But till the time they enter US they will not know till what time they can stay in US. They are planning to stay 4-5 months. Any ideas on how to book the tickets economically? I understand that every airline has cancellation charges. If that is the case do you have any idea which airline has least cancellation/ exchange ticket penalty? Wanted to know how do most people book the tickets ?
