Tourist visa extension twice during one visit

Is it possible to file for extension (I-539) twice during the same visit?
My friend's mother came to US on tourist visa last year to take care of her ailing son (my friend). The first extension was filed, and was granted till May 2013. Is it possible to extend it further due to medical reasons (not for the traveller but for sponsor)?

Tourist Visa should be used for tourism and meeting your family and not to work as a helper or caretaker. That is an absolutely unacceptable reason for extension. A second extension will only be given for a really really genuine reason. As it is by asking for extension her chances of getting a Visa renewal are lower.
