Travelling outside the US before I-94 expiration and with I-539 pending

My I-94 date expiration is the 21st November, and I have an I-539 extension request pending. Am I able to travel outside the country and return before the 21st without complications to my extension request? From what I've read leaving the country during the pending process will abandon the extension request, however does returning to the country prior to the initial I-94 expiration date change that?
