question regarding extension of visitor visa

Can someone please share their experiences about extending visitor visa.

My parents are currently visiting and have their six month visa until 12th december 2006. I wanted to extend my mother's visa for another 3-4 months. But after reading about extension visa on this website it scared me. It states that if the extension of visitor visa is denied, it automatically cancels the 10 year multiple entry visa (which my parents have). I have couple of questions:

Should i take a risk of applying for an extension anyways?

Should i apply for extension of visa for both my parents eventhough my father is leaving in december?

Has anyone's parents request for extension of visa been denied?

If it's not been denied...what were the reasons you provided for extension?

I wish to extend my mother's visa since i am having a baby in september and would like for my mother to stay longer with me.

I would appreciate any suggestions/responses/advice anyone has to share.
