Help - Extension for Visitor Visa

My parents have 10 yr muliple entry visa, but upon arrival in US for first time, officer granted only 5 weeks visa to them ! Is it okay to apply for extension after 1 week ?

I have applied for a visitor visa for my Mother. If she got a visa for 1 yr or 10 yrs whether she has to come to US within the 6 months after getting the visa or she can come to US in any time before the validity period?

Please reply me as soon as possible. If she has to come to US within 6 months after getting visa, I have to reschedule my mothers appointment.
