My in-laws have 10 yr multiple entry visas ! When they arrived in US, officer granted only 5 weeks visa ! I did some research and found out that once they applied for extension they can stay here legally until INS determines to reject or approve their application ! What can be the consequences if their application gets rejected and they have over stayed for 3 months ? ( The duration which INS will take to decide )

If their extension gets denied and if they are still in US even for a day, their 10 years visa is voided.Immihelp Support

YOu are legal till you receive a response from USCIS even if your I94 date is past. If the response is a denial, you must leave immediately. They will not give you a time frame to leave but it is understood to be " as soon as possible". If you linger on too long, you will attract 222g( visa void due to overstay). Remember this is a risky situation, many times one cannot get a ticket out of the country right after receiving a denial and if you stay on too long after receiving the denial, you may face
the cancellation of your visa when you enter next on the same visa.
( you should carry the denial notice , copy of I94 and dated boarding pass
to prove your departure when entering next)
