Travel while awaiting I-539 Extension

My mother is visiting on a tourist visa and we applied for extending her stay (by 4 months), by using the I-539 form, approx. 2 months prior to the expiration of the date on I-94 (we mailed her original I-94 and retained a photocopy). Her original I-94 date has expired and we haven't yet heard back from USCIS (no approval / rejection).

Can she travel to Canada (she has a valid Canadian Visa) and safely return to the U.S.?

I-539 processing takes many months.

She can legally reenter US from canada only if she has a valid US visa. But remember, entry to US is at the discretion of the entry officer and may be denied on the basis that she applied for an extension and is trying to stay too long.
