This question has been answered in the FAQ thread at the beginning in this section.
I'll answer it again ;
you can apply for ext.now, but the response takes many months and most likely it will come after her I94 expiry. She will be legal even after her I94 expiry till she gets a response. She must save the ext appl. receipt to prove her legal status.
RESPONSE: If it is a denial , she will have 30 days to leave US ( they say 30 days, but I suggest one should leave asap).
When entering next , she won't have any problems if she left fast after receiving the denail but sometimes the officers ask questions and one must carry her denial letter , her boarding pass when she left US, to show to the entry officer , in case there is a question about her staying past I94 date.
