Visa extension

hi everyone...

I am a Doctor from India. Currently I am in the US for an exam(USMLE), and I have applied for Residency (Post graduation in Medicine) in US.
My stay visa expires on Dec 23rd '07. My problem is that the hospitals continue interviews till end of january.

My question is : would it be advisable for a candidate like me to go in for an extension for a period of 20 days or so?
I had heard that candidates like me ( doctors planning to work in US), its not advisable to get a visa extension because it might create problems for me when i convert to a work visa ( H1 or J1). I have actually heard of some cases who's work visa (H1/J1) got rejected in Mumbai consulate, and incidentally, they had extended their stay visa when in US.

I will really appreciate all guidance I could get!

i also had one more doubt....

my alternative plan was to go back to India on dec 23rd... and come back in january...around 8-10th jan for a period of 20-30 days or so... finish the interviews & then go back...

I have got a 6 months stay right now, and will be staying in US for its entire duration. This is my 2nd trip to the US. In my first trip, I was here for a period of 3 weeks ( when i had a stay of 3 months).


would i be taking a risk by coming to US within such a short period of time??
I would be having definitive reasons for this 3rd trip, alongwith return tickets.

I really need guidance on this issue!

You will need interview letters. It is always better to travel back as soon as possible for easier renetry. If possible depart before Dec as soon as you are able to.

When you come back present the interview letters/emails and concrete itinerary.
