Visitor stay extension

Hi,
My in-laws are in US and I would like to extend their stay due to unforseen reasons. I have not done this before. I checked out some websites on how to do this but have questions.

What are the chances of getting an extension? I heard that its difficult to get extension these days.

The return journey is booked for Feb 8th, 2009. I would like to extend their stay at least till June. If approved, will I get 6 months or its not guaranteed?

How long will it take for the INS to respond?

Any reponses will be appreciates.

the key is what is the reason for the extension? Unforeseen circumstances? Let me guess the wife is pregnant?
