extending the extension

I sent in the I-539 application for an extension of my parents visa. we requested a 4 months extension in the request letter. Now, we want our parent to stay for the full allowable six months. Can I write a letter (referencing a case number) requesting six months instead of 4?.

We should have requested six months at the beginning (studpid!), but a friend said that his parents got the full six months even through they request only 4. Is this the standard?

You can't request it like that to change in between.

As we feared the extension was granted only for 4 months (I am really regretting not having asked for the full six months). My parents have to leave by the 17 of June. What are the chances of requesting another extension for 2 months (that make their stay 1 full year)?

Most probably the when the decision comes they would have left the US. If at that point the decision comes back with a denial would have out of status for 2 months?

If they leave before decision comes, they would not be out of status.
