Extension of Visitor's visa

Dear Administrator,
Under 10yrs multiple entry visa, to meet my son, we ( I and my wife) reached USA on 5th May,2004 and got staying visa for 6 months. Now we have applied for extension of visa for next 6 months on 24th September,2004.Our staying visa expires on 4th November,2004. If extension decision procedure take more time that is beyond 4th November,2004, can we stay and wait for the decision? What is the maximum legal period for which we may wait? Some where I read 120 days but unable to locate it for sure. Obviously we shall inquir after one month of application. On line status does not mention any details and processing date. Nebraska USCIS center did not got updated after 6th October that processing of which date is going on? Please help.

You can stay until you hear decision from USCIS or 120 days, whichever is earlier.

Grace period for air ticket confirmation if extension denied

Dear Administrator,

I understand that if extension is denied, automatically one is out of status, I do have the open return ticket, but as soon as INS decision is received one has to wait for airlines ticket/return ticket departure date confirmation. How many days are permitted?
