How to extend stay

Hi,

My wife and I are visiting our sons here. When we entered the board, immigration officer only give us one month of time to stay. I am wondering if we can go to mexico then come back. by this means, when we through immigration, we could have a chance to get a longer stay period. Is there anyone who can tell me if this is a good way to try? Will it be any problems to apply for tourism visa to Mexico? We are holding 1 year multi-entry visa to the US.
