Visa Requirements for an Extended Holiday in the USA

Hello

I am a British National planning an extended (9 month) holiday travelling around N America during which time I will be visiting both the US and Canada. I will not be seeking employment of any kind. What provisions do I need to make with respect to obtaining a visa? Do I need a visa?
