To Whom it May Concern:
I am assisting a good friend to look into extending his stay in the US. He is living in Maui Hi, and has traveled here oh holiday for the purpose of windsurfing after serving in the Israeli army for three years. He has found that his six month "permission to stay" has been insufficient to get the most out of the beauty of Maui and before beginning school in the fall he would like to enjoy another few months in the states before having the commitment of school, work and family. He is scheduled to begin classes at Rupin University in Michmoret Israel in October and would like to receive permission to stay in Hawaii until the end of September (an additional three months).
In assisting him in this complicated process I have found myself confused. He has already purchased a return ticket to Israel for May in order to fulfill the requirements of his visa (six months stay per visit to the US), however, in order to apply for an extension of his current stay he must have a return ticket dated in the future (in this case September). My question is: does he need to purchase an additional ticket (or change the dates of his current ticket home) BEFORE his request for an extension is granted?
Please advise us as to what to do.
