need to extend my visa - possibly have the wrong one - help?

i want to stay in the us for more than 6 months but thats all they gave me.
what can i do to get more time?
what are the chances of me going to canada or mexico and getting back into the country with more time that way?

Visitors are not given more than 6 months except for genuine emergency circumstances. Any stay beyond I-94 automatically voids the Visa.
Leaving and re-entering does not work, a rule of thumb is you should spend more time outside the US and inside.
