  • USA tourist visa validity dates

    Hello,
After waiting a year for an interview at the Ottawa US consulate for a B1/B2 tourist visa, they asked me what my purpose for travel was during the interview. I said I wanted to spend Christmas with my friend's family in the US (had also said this in my DS-160 form when I first applied 1 year ago).
They told me on the spot that my visa was approved. Just received my passport only to find out they gave me a visa valid from May 30,2023 to August 28,2023 . Anyone experienced this before? How were these dates even determined? Is there a way to fix it?

Maybe they meant 2024 and it's a typo. I'm not sure how you can contact the consulate to fix it.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Wow, that sounds frustrating after waiting so long! It’s surprising they’d issue a visa with such limited validity, especially when your plans were for Christmas. I haven't experienced this myself, but it might be worth reaching out to the consulate or embassy to see if they can explain the dates or offer guidance on reapplying. Hopefully, there’s a way to fix it so you can make your trip!

The U.S. tourist visa (B-1/B-2) is usually valid for 10 years, allowing for multiple entries. Each entry generally permits a stay of up to 6 months, but an extension can be requested through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services if needed.
