Regarding Travel Insurance

Hi guys am visiting SF from 5th to 20th sept and I am looking to buy travel insurance for the same. I have got couple of queries regarding the same.

1. Do I need to buy the insurance only for my travel period or I can do that on a month by month basis? As in my travel would be for 16 days approx, so can i buy the insurance for 30days instead?
2. If I do the above, will it anyway confuse my intention to the airport authorities while entering US? I hope they do not stop me due to this?
3. Can my cousin buy my travel insurance and bring it along with him when he comes to pick me up from SF?
