Insurance proof for journey from India

Hi,
I am considering buying medical insurance for my parents starting from the date they leave India. Just wondering whether I would need to send them an i.d. card/insurance document before hand so they can keep it with them during their journey in case they have an emergency during their journey? Also, would such emergencies be covered by any insurance policy that I buy here in the U.S.?
