I-864 and parents' medical bills

Are a USC's ( who signed an I-864 for his parent) assets, home etc, really in trouble if the parent incurs large medical bills?

Is it theory or in reality do the hospitals really come after the USC?

1. Yes. I-864 is a legally binding document.

2. Yes, in reality. All these hospitals are private businesses run for profit and they will do everything possible to get money.
