  • Atlas Natural Disaster Coverage? ER?

    Dear InsuBuy,

After reading through this website, I went from "totally confused" to "educated consumer" in just a few hours! Wow! Thanks so much for all the wonderful info!

My MIL is coming to visit us here in Florida in September and October and I'm deciding between IMG Protection America and MNU Atlas America. Your answers to the following questions would be greatly appreciated:

    1. Some other insurance brokers’ sites list natural disaster coverage - (weather related: hurricane, flood etc) under Atlas America. It is listed in the brochure right between "repatriation of remains" and "emergency cash". My guess is those are last year's brochures and MNU dropped the coverage sometime after Katrina, but I still thought I should confirm this with you. Who knows, maybe they've just added that coverage and you haven't yet had a chance to update your site (am I an optimist! ).

    2. Hygeia PPO vs. First Health: In your experience, who has lower network negotiated rates, or are they pretty much the same? I'm assuming the negotiated rate would apply to the deductible, as well as 20% coinsurance.

    3. MIL has type 1 diabetes. I know, anything pre-existing won’t be covered. We are buying the insurance mainly to cover accidents, Godforbid. In your experience, who is less likely to try denying legitimate claims saying it’s all due to diabetes or she was more susceptible to illness because of her diabetes (e.g. pneumonia, indigestion)?

    4. Atlas doesn’t cover diseases of the skin. Would that include allergies?

    5. Emergency Room use: In case visit to ER doesn’t end in hospitalization, Protection America will require additional $250 deductible, while Atlas just plainly won’t cover it. Have I read that correctly?

So far, it seems like Atlas provides some extras, like terrorism protection and early pregnancy complications protection and hopefully hurricane coverage, but they also list more exclusions. Your answer to question 5 is probably what should make our decision for us.

    TIA!

For your specific case, choice is very simple. You need to buy Atlas America because Protection America (IMG) is NOT available in the state of Florida.

For the benefit of others in other states, here are the answers:

    1. It is a new coverage that they recently added and we are displaying that at https://www.insubuy.com/atlas-americ...cal-insurance/
Is there any other place on our web site where you saw something outdated or natural disaster coverage not mentioned? If so, please let us know by posting an URL and explanation and we will correct it right away if required.

    2. There is no easy way to know like that. Each network has hundreds of thousands of providers all across United States and it can all vary from region to region and time to time.

    3. Both are equally good.

    4. You are correct.

    5. What you wrote about Protection America is true.

But, it is not completely true for Atlas America.

Whenever you go to an emergency room, usually there are 2 types of charges: the treatment charge and the room charge itself. If you are NOT subquently admitted into the hospital, Altas America will not cover the room charge.

(6.) You are right about it.

      1. I did further investigation to see what is going on.

Insurance companies provide their agents with the PDF versions of the brochures and also many times HTML versions of the brochures. Often, there are some minor discrepancies in the wordings in those 2 versions, mostly in language, even though they mean the same thing.

To avoid that, we ourselves make HTML versions from PDF versions so that they are exactly the same. (It takes us lot of time and resources to do that but we think that is the best way to go.)

In case of Natural Disaster Benefit in Atlas America, in PDF file, the order is

      Repatriation of Remains
      Emergency Cash Transfers
Lost Passport or Travel Documents Assistance
      Natural Disaster <!------------------------ Listed here
      Trip Interruption

However, in the company supplied HTML brochure, the order is
      Repatriation of Remains:
      Natural Disaster: <!---------------------- Listed here
      Emergency Cash Transfers
Lost Passport or Travel Documents Assistance
      Trip Interruption:

Most agents would not bother and just post whatever version they were provided.

However, we made HTML brochure from PDF brochure for consistency. That is why even in our HTML brochure, Natural Disaster benefit is listed between Lost Passport and Trip Interruption, just like PDF version.

Anyway, this is confusing to the customers. Therefore, I have conveyed the message to the IT dept. of Atlas America regarding the same.

      I hope that clarifies.

Thanks for such a quick reply!

Just to clarify: you are saying Protection America isn’t available to people visiting Florida? Even though my MIL doesn’t live here, nor is she a US citizen? (of course, what else would “not offered in Florida” mean) Well, that really simplifies our decision.

It’s great to hear that Atlas covers natural disasters after all! Now I’m positive we won’t have any major storms for the rest of this hurricane season, or at least while MIL is here .

To give a short answer to very complicated situation:

          * If you are located in Florida and buying insurance for your MIL, you can't buy IMG products.
          * If you are specifying any Florida address in your application, you can't buy IMG products.

That is because in any of such situations, even though your MIL does not permanently live in Florida, she is not a US citizen, just visiting US, still Florida state government considers that the business is being conducted in Florida and they don't allow that.

That makes a lot of sense.

Re updated brochure – my bad. I linked from “see all plans” page, then did a search for “hurricane”. Since your site doesn’t allow highlighting, it seemed like nothing was found. Then I quickly scrolled down to check the location where it was listed at that other site and it wasn’t there.

For many of us in hurricane prone states, seeing words “natural disaster coverage” makes us skip a heartbeat. $100/day up to 5 days sure isn’t much, but still a nice selling point. You guys could definitely put that on the comparison page.

            Thanks again!
