Any comprehensive products for 80+ coming only on a short trip?
Hi,
Is there a comprehensive insurance product that makes sense for someone 80+ and who will be in the US for a short period? Both of the products mentioned above severely limit benefits in the first 30 days (max $1000 payment only).
For instance, my father will be visiting the US for about 45 days. He is 81 and thankfully still in excellent health with no preexisting conditions. I would like to play it safe and get a comprehensive plan. But the premium quote is ~$900 and it would realistically only cover the last 15 days of his trip. I understand that insurance companies would consider this age group to be at high risk, but not getting any meaningful coverage for the first 30 days makes it hard to justify paying the much higher premium. My father is even willing to undergo a medical test if it will help.
My biggest concern with the "inbound usa" fixed benefit plan is that there is no negotiated fee with providers and as we well know, their "standard rates" can be many times the "network/insurance negotiated" rates.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Please note that the limitation of $1,000 in first 30 days of the effective date in Diplomat plans apply only to the sicknesses and not to the accidents. Their reasoning is behind that is if someone gets seriously sick so soon after getting the insurance, it might most likely be a pre-existing condition anyway and not covered. Therefore, instead of arguing with the customer, they just put $1,000 limit on sicknesses for first 30 days. In $1,000, many minor things like cold, flu, fever etc. can be covered most of the times. Of course, accidents may happen at any time and the full coverage up to the policy maximum is available right away from the effective date.
There is really not much choice available for 80+. What we have listed is pretty much what is available in the market. Insurance companies don't prefer to insure such elderly people and therefore most companies offer insurance only till age 79 years.
There are plans that offer $10,000 or $15,000 in comprehensive plans, if you are interested in them. You can visit https://www.insubuy.com and click on 'View All Plans'.Thanks & Regards
