  • Practically useless visitor insurance for elderly people

    Hi All,

My mother came to USA 2 weeks back on visitor visa. I tried to get visitor insurance for her. No insurance will cover any pre-existing conditions plus any conditions arising as a consequence of pre-existing conditions. Now my mother has diabetese and BP. So the insurance won't cover diabetese and BP and they won't even cover kidney , heart problems that can arise due to diabetese and BP. So practically the insurance will be useless for me because I don't want an insurance cover for cold and fever.

I understand most of the Indian parents above 60 will have some kind of pre-existing conditions and insurance will not cover many conditions arising as a result of pre-existing conditions. So we are at the risk of keeping our parents without health insurance.

Is there a solution to this generic problem.

    Thanks

Your understanding of pre-existing conditions is pretty much correct.

Insurance company does not cover any pre-existing conditions or anything related to pre-existing conditions. And there is no solution to this. As a broker, we work with most companies in US that offer visitor medical insurance, one stop shop. And no company covers pre-existing conditions. If they do, they will be in loss and will have to close their business.

However, it is still important to buy visitor medical insurance for visitors because you never know what is going to happen tomorrow. You may still get any new medical conditions/sickness that person did not have before buying the insurance. Or you may get any injuries or accidents at any time. I have had many of my customers got hurt/injured during the travel itself, at the airport handling luggage etc. Or you may fall down walking in snow or otherwise. Anything can happen.

You may argue that possibility of something entirely new happening or someone getting injured/meet accident is pretty low anyway. Well, that is exactly the meaning of insurance. e.g., company is charging you average $100/$150 per month and providing you $50,000. Similarly, they are charging same amount to many others like you and would pay claims to the person who has eligible claim. If everyone claims more than what they pay, insurance company can not run their business.

You may say you are only worried about the problems he/she already has. That is exactly why insurance company does not cover because they will be in loss.

You may say that you are ready to pay higher premium to cover pre-existing conditions. That is not possible because no matter how high premium you pay, it will still be lower than the expenses. If the premium is so high that is either close to the actual expenses or more, then there is no point in buying insurance itself.

And my own parents and in-laws are from India and are of older age. And both of my parents and both my in-laws have pre-existing conditions, such as cancer, high blood pressure, arthiritis, cataract. And there is no solution to this if something happens related to those conditions while they are here.

And for anyone who is inviting visitors, there are only 2 choices regarding pre-existing conditions: Either bear all the expenses if something happens or you may consider not inviting them at all.

Pre-existing terms should be made more transparent

My Mom was denied coverage for a "NEW" Heart abnormality due to 'Pre-Existing' High BP, diabetes.

The 'Heart Abnormality' was totally new condition that developed all of a sudden.

High BP, diabetes are "Risk Factors" and NOT "Pre-existing" condition for the actual issue.

        Try explaining that.

Without looking at the medical records and correspondence with the insurance company, it is not possible to make generic comments.

If you are having claims problems, please contact our office and we would be glad to help you once we have all the information and proper authorization.
