  • Visitor Insurance for regular check ups for mother's breast cancer

My mother is suffering from breast cancer but has completed her treatment including full completion of Chemotheraphy treatment in India in last 6 months. She is not required to have any other surgery or treatment in future. I would like to invite her to US to spend some time with us ( 3-6 months). what are my options for health insurance for her?? I have used Patriot America and Protection America in past for my in laws , but in this case as my mother has an ailment in past,is there any insurance company that will cover her in case she has to go for some small treatment here??

Unfortunately, anything related to her cancer would be excluded and not covered by any plan.

      Hello Narendra,

Thanks for the reply. So, as I understand if she has to go through successive chemotherapies/ surgeries here then it wont be covered.

But how about doctor visits for precautionary scans, Ultra sounds, PET scan, blood tests etc?? what we invisage that she may have to go through 1 or 2 scans/ tests every month just for monitoring purposes. She will not need any chemotherapies, or radio sessions/surgeries etc.

      Is this covered or not??

      Looking forward to your feedback

None of that would be covered. You will have to pay for all of that yourself.

          Hello Narendra,
So what does the insurance cover?? And who decides what situation is a pre existing ailment or not??

I saw 3 insurance companies on your website that are specifically for 'Pre existing conditions". So , should I be looking at them e.g Atlas America, Liason America etc.

          Please advice

Insurance will cover any new medical conditions, injuries, accidents that may occur after the effective date of the policy.

Based on the dr opinion and medical records, insurance company's claim department will determine whether it is pre-existing condition or not.

Regarding those 3 plans, you have misunderstood what it covers regarding pre-existing conditions. No insurance covers any scheduled or anticipated expenses related to medical expenses as it would be pure loss for them.

            1. Atlas America:
For people under age 70, acute onset of pre-existing conditions is covered up to $15,000 as long as it occurs without any prior symptoms and you take treatment within 24 hours of that.

            2. Liaison Majestic:
$200/night for every night spent in the hospital for heart attack or stroke that occurs due to pre-existing conditions ($3,000 max).

            3. Inbound USA:
Max $5,000 (Max $3,000 for 70+) if you are admitted in the hospital for heart attack or storke that occurs due to pre-existing conditions, subject to sub-limits of the plan.

None of the above 3 plans would cover anything related to cancer that you mentioned, because those things are routine and anticipated expenses that for the check ups your mother would have to go through and it is already known at this point that she needs that.

At this point, you have two options:
            1. Pay for all those expenses yourself during her visit. Even then, her visit is not recommended because the doctor over here may not be aware of all the treatment and the case history of your mother. Those are best done by the hospital that did her original treatment.
            2. In cancer, those check up durations are gradually reduced as time passes. First every month, then every 3 months, then every 6 months, then every 1 year and so on. Delay your mother's visit until the check ups are not that frequent and she can visit just after her latest scheduled check up is done and go back just before her next scheduled check up is due and hope nothing related to that happens in between.

In short, there is no insurance plan available anywhere in the market that would take care of your mother's expenses.

I hope that answers all your questions.
            Thanks & Regards
