India Transit Visa

Eligibility

A Transit Visa is granted for the sole purpose of enabling the visa holder to travel through India to reach his/her ultimate destination. Change of purpose is not allowed.

Those who have a connecting flight from India to some other destination within 72 hours of landing in India are eligible to apply for a Transit Visa.

A Transit Visa is required if you are going to change from the International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal of any Indian Airport or if you are going to stay in an airport hotel even for a few hours.

If you remain within the limits of the waiting area reserved for International Transit Passengers of the Indian Airport and are not going to cross the Immigration Controls at any time, you do NOT need a Transit visa. You are advised to talk to the airlines for the exact requirements.

Duration and Validity

The visa will ordinarily be valid for a single/double entry and for entry within 15 days of date of issue. The Transit Visa is valid for direct transit only for a maximum period of 3 days. For a stay in India beyond 3 days, an appropriate visa should be obtained.

The Visa duration starts on the day of issuance, and not on the day of entry into India.
