April 2022 - 551 travel experience from India
Hi,
I got 551 stamping recently, had to give back green card due to misspelled name on the card. Travelled to India without physical green card but just with 551 stamp on the passport. I took Air India from Delhi to JFK. Came to Delhi on a domestic flight, at the international transfer desk the immigration officer was not sure or aware about the stamp and he was insisting about a physical card. I explained him about the stamp, he asked me to go different floor where senior immigration check the visas.
Exited the domestic and reentered the airport where the immigration checks happen for all passengers directly boarding at Delhi.
I showed the stamp to the officer, he looked at for a minute and let me through.
At JFK, the immigration officer redirected me to a separate office, there they checked some details, asked about my card (told them I had to give it back due to misspelled name), this process took about a 15 minutes and they let through.
Not pleasant experience but not a issue if you need to travel.
