I surrendered my Indian passport and got the surrender certtificate last year. But now, I lost the surrender certificate and I want to apply for the OCI. What is the process for getting a duplicate copy of my surrender cert? Is it possible? Or do I need to spply and get a new one again (pay 175 dollars?). Any suggestions?

Thanks
Ram

renunciation/surrender certificate
This comment/complaint is regarding the EXTRA $250 penalty fee (up on top of $20 which itself is atrocious) that they are charging for getting a surrender/renunciation certificate if a person was naturalized BEFORE june 1 2010 and their passport expires after 2005 and if they have kept it without surrendering for 3 years. Now, it is no fault of ours that they started this rule. It is no fault of ours that they did NOT want our passports at the time of us getting our OCI cards and Indian Visas (yes a person at the NYC consulate said that to me) and it is not our fault that our passport expires after 2005. This seems totally unfair and unjust. Honestly, I dont have $250+ dollars lying around. I hope someone does something about this, because this is totally not fair. Travisa is no help either, they are just pointing their fingers at someone else!! Let us do something about this together.

Surrender Renunciation Certificate Fee Waived
Fees for Obtaining Surrender / Renunciation Certificate Waived

In view of a large number of representations received from Persons of Indian Origin, it has been decided that the fees for obtaining Renunciation/Surrender Certificate from applicants who have acquired US citizenships before June 1, 2010 will be waived. However, a miscellaneous service fee of US$ 20/- will be charged for surrender of passport for cancellation. No penalties will be charged. Already decided cases will, however, not be reopened.

Indian passport holders who acquire US/foreign citizenships on or after June 1, 2010 will, however, be required to pay the fees of US$ 175/- for obtaining Renunciation/Surrender certificate.
